Stop blaming yourself for a system designed to use you up. You have been passed over, managed out, quietly sidelined, and handed feedback that functionally means “we’d prefer a different species.”
Through all of it, you kept recalibrating, kept asking what was wrong with you. Nothing is wrong with you. The economics are wrong. The system was not built with your brain in mind, and it has been profiting from that gap ever since.

The System Cheats
Your manager took credit for your work, rated you poorly for producing it, and got promoted. You blamed yourself. That’s the trap.
Corporate environments reward social fluency above output. A 2021 study in Autism in Adulthood found autistic employees outperformed neurotypical peers on objective task measures while receiving lower performance ratings from managers. Better output. Worse rating. On God.
Your performance rating is your manager’s feeling about how you made them feel during production. Your output is a fact.
The assessment framework treats these as identical, and you pay the gap every single time.
We live in a Vibe Economy. Unless you engineer your way out.
Document everything. Build relationships above your manager’s level. Specialise so deep into your strongest area that your market value becomes a number no single manager’s opinion can override. Fuck em.
Masking Costs
Your colleague does the job and goes home. You do the job plus monitor your face, decode subtext, suppress your stim, and manage a sensory environment built for someone else’s nervous system. Same salary. No compensation.
A 2017 study in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders identified masking as a significant predictor of anxiety, depression and burnout, with the cost compounding over time, not reducing. Persistent Demand Avoidance adds another layer because the sustained demand to perform normalcy is itself a demand the PDA nervous system fights all day on top of everything else.
Adjusting your communication style for context is a skill. Suppressing your entire operating system to pass is a sustained physiological injury. Most neurodivergent people were never taught the difference, so they defaulted to total concealment because total concealment was the only available strategy.
Audit which masking behaviours are load-bearing in your current environment and which are old survival habits with no current threat attached. Build one space where the mask comes fully off. Your nervous system needs somewhere to discharge or the parts start breaking down.
Paper Lies
You get the diagnosis and wait for things to improve. Bruh. The paperwork changed. The environment didn’t.
Fewer than a third of autistic employees who requested workplace accommodations received them without significant pushback. (Autistic Self Advocacy Network, 2020). The law exists. Enforcement is a different country entirely.
A late diagnosis also destabilises identity before building a new one. You grieve versions of yourself. You get angry about years spent working around something with a name the whole time. This is the process, not a setback. As the Bible puts it, old wineskins cannot hold the new wine.
Use the diagnosis to request conditions matching your actual wiring, access communities who already know the terrain, and stop building your career around a misread of your own brain. The diagnosis is the first honest coordinate you have been given. Use it as a starting gun, not a finish line.
You Always Stay
You knew the job was wrong six months in. You stayed three years. You knew. You stayed anyway.
ADHD executive function deficits make initiating change harder at a neurological level, not as an excuse but as a clinical reality. Autistic adults report significantly higher difficulty with life transitions independent of anxiety levels. (Gurbuz et al., 2019). You are fighting a current most people around you do not have.
Neurodivergent people are disproportionately targeted for workplace exploitation because of these exact patterns. High tolerance, high output, low likelihood of exit. The wrong employers have always known this and priced their behaviour accordingly. This shit pisses me off.
Treat the exit as a logistics problem. One updated CV section. One conversation outside your company. One freelance project building an alternative income thread. Direction changes before momentum does. You do not need the courage to leave today. You need the discipline to make 90 days from now different from right now.
Build Your Own
The traditional career path was designed by people who thrive in it. Five days a week, open plan, advanced by visibility, interrupted constantly. For neurodivergent people this is not merely suboptimal. This is actively hostile to the conditions required for peak performance.
Self-employed autistic individuals report significantly higher job satisfaction and lower burnout than those in conventional employment. (University of Victoria). Pattern recognition, deep niche expertise, and the capacity for solitary focused work confer measurable advantages in business contexts. The traits making you expensive in someone else’s structure make you formidable in your own.
The entry point is one offer, one customer, one result. A freelance project in your strongest area. A digital product built from your deepest interest. Not a brand, not a business plan, not a registered company. Start with the smallest possible version and let the demand tell you how far to scale.
Your special interest is a business model waiting for an owner who understands it from the inside. Stop subsidising someone else’s company with it. Hit Maxes Evade Taxes.
Conclusion
The system was not built for your brain. Autistic adults hold the lowest employment rate of any disabled group in the UK. (ONS, 2021). This is not a mystery. This is the predictable output of a system measuring the wrong things and billing you for the shortfall. Build the conditions, the documentation, the exits, and the alternatives.
